Styling a Midi Dress for Every Occasion
What is a Midi Dress?
The midi dress is arguably one of the best staple dresses a woman can have in their wardrobe. A midi dress is a dress where the hem ends anywhere between the knee and the ankle. This is not to be confused with a maxi dress, which falls below the ankle and even to the floor. With such a loose definition, this leaves plenty of room for differentiation with plenty of different dress fits, styles and designs to choose from to match your own personal style.
How to Style a Midi Dress
The great thing about midi-length dresses is that they are long enough to be worn throughout most of the year. In the spring, summer, autumn, and even winter, midi dresses are fashionable! Plus, due to the ability for many different styles and designs, the midi dress can be styled for many different occasions such as casual outings, formal events, and even work. The Midi Dress is the perfect versatile piece for your wardrobe!
Styling a Midi Dress for Summer & Spring
Ah spring and summer, the perfect time for those cute and colourful dresses! When choosing a midi dress in spring or summer, pick a lightweight fabric like cotton or linen to keep you cool and breezy during those warm days. For an easy summer style, pair a lightweight midi dress with some sandals for a comfortable look that will help you beat the heat. Add a big sun hat, sunglasses and a tote and you’re ready for the beach! Or if you’re heading out for afternoon drinks, swap the sandals for some sneakers or mules and you’re ready for a summery girls’ night out!
Nothing is more perfect than a floral dress in spring. Style a floral midi dress with a cropped cardigan and a pair of sneakers for a cute spring look. You can even add a large flower claw clip or any other floral accessories to elevate the spring vibes, creating the perfect outfit for spring picnics and other adventures.
Styling a Midi Dress for Winter & Autumn
Didn’t think you could style a midi dress for the cooler seasons? Of course you can! Midi dresses are perfect for autumn and winter outfits since the longer hemline can help keep your legs warm For these cooler months, choosing a thicker fabric is key. Pick a warm fabric like knit, jersey, or corduroy. For an easy winter style, pick a warm knit midi dress and pair it with your favourite comfy boots. Add a warm outer layer like a long coat or jacket and some accessories like a scarf and a beanie and you’re ready for those winter outings.
Not ready to give up your spring dresses when it gets to autumn? One of my favourite hacks is to layer with a knit jumper over the top. For a more flattering fit, put a belt, ribbon or even a bra/sports bra over the dress and under your jumper. Then tuck the jumper’s hem up into it to give it a cute cropped look. Voila! Now you can wear your cute spring dresses in autumn!

Styling a Midi Dress for Formal Occasions
Formal occasions are where the midi dress really shines. The mid-length hemline is perfect for when you’re not sure how formal the occasion is, making it the perfect option for weddings, functions, galas and other fancy events. Plus, it shows off those stunning heels and leaves plenty of room for dancing!
Typically, formal midi dresses are made in a more luxurious fabric such as silk, satin, lace, organza or chiffon. Formal midi dresses are also normally designed in a darker fabric, like navy, wine or even black. Other classic formal colours are jewel tones, modelled after traditional gemstone colours such as emerald green, sapphire blue or ruby red. However, you aren’t limited to these colours – wear whatever you feel comfortable in and reflects your sense of style!
Styling a Midi Dress for Work
The midi dress is easily work-appropriate with its longer hemline, and combining that with a higher neckline, you have the perfect office dress! When looking for a work midi dress, opt for a fabric like knit, jersey or cotton so you’ll be comfortable during the work day. A classic office outfit is a darker-coloured shirt midi dress, teamed with heels and a blazer. If your workplace has more of a relaxed, casual vibe, style a black bodycon midi dress with an open white button-up shirt over the top. Add some white sneakers or black flats to complete an easy yet chic office look.
